Dolomites Van Life Guide: Giau Pass, Part 4

Join me in my latest adventure across the Dolomites as we venture into one of the most beautiful passes in the region, Giao Pass. Towering at an impressive 2,236 meters, this pass offers a balcony parking spot with phenomenal views.

You might be wondering, why we always choose passes as our base. Well, staying in passes allows us to explore the surrounding mountains in every direction. As we have discovered in our previous episodes, each pass has its own unique attractions and activities to offer.

If you’ve followed our journey from Falzarego Pass, you’ll be thrilled to know that Giao Pass is a mere 30-minute drive away, showcasing some of the most incredible scenery along the way. In this episode, I’ll also introduce you to an incredible pit stop located halfway to Giao Pass. Prepare yourself for a hidden gem – Lago Federa, a loop hike that won’t appear in the typical “must-do” lists of the Dolomites. However, trust me when I say it’s a treasure you won’t want to miss, especially if you prefer to avoid crowds during peak season.

Now, let’s delve into the details of this beautiful hike. Starting and finishing at the car park, you’ll find yourself immersed in a trail winding through a picturesque alpine forest. As you traverse little streams and ascend further, the breathtaking views gradually unfold. When the trail splits, make sure to take the right path, a decision you’ll appreciate later on. This route begins with a challenging ascent, rewarding you with a relaxing second half of the loop. You’ll soon discover the highlight of the hike—Lago Federa. Take this opportunity to soak in the serenity here. With less than half an hour remaining to reach the car park, the good news is that you’ll be descending from this point onward.

Once back in the car park now, the journey to Giao Pass takes about 10 minutes, navigating some winding roads. Here pick one of the laybys to park. Keep an eye out for the sight of wild horses coming to say hello. Though it’s still a layby close to the road, the fascinating valley views from your window will undoubtedly bring you some joy.

The next day arrives, and you might be pondering your next move. If you’re up for more hiking, fantastic trails are waiting to be explored on either side of the pass. Opting for the right path, you’ll embark on a fun hike that leads to the Cinque Torri peaks from a different viewpoint. Along the way, consider visiting one of the mountain refuges for a lunch break with unbeatable views. For those equipped with via Ferrata gear, don’t miss the chance to make a quick detour to the summit of Dell Averau, towering at an impressive 2,649 meters. Seeking even more adventure? Venture left from the Pass, where uncharted territory awaits, with its lush valleys, exposed mountain trails, and majestic peaks. This area is an idyllic place to escape the crowds, as we encountered only a handful of hikers during our stay.

Giao Pass is a wonderful place to spend a couple of days, but bear in mind that you’re situated high in the mountains. The weather can quickly turn moody, and nights may bring frosty temperatures.

Throughout our exploration of the Dolomites, we’ve been fortunate to have a reliable 5G signal in all our locations, and Giao Pass is no exception. I hope you’ve enjoyed our journey so far, and be sure to stay tuned for our next episode as we approach the capital of the Dolomites—Cortina.
